Description
Humane man-trap made of iron with a central square plate and two jaws in the centre. These would be pulled apart when set and when pressure was applied to the central plate, the jaws would snap shut. A padlock is attached to the plate using a chain.

Context (Production / use)
Used by land owners as a way to trap poachers or trespassers. Unlike earlier man-traps which had teeth, these traps were designed to cause less damage to the individual. When a leg was caught in the trap, a key would be required to unlock the barrels again and free the person trapped. The lock was used to attach to a fixed item in the ground, e.g. a tree or gate, to prevent the trap from moving or being taken.
