Context (Production / use)
Used by land owners as a way to trap poachers or trespassers. Unlike earlier man-traps which had teeth, these traps were designed to cause less damage to the individual. When a leg was caught in the trap, a key would be required to unlock the barrels again and free the person trapped. The lock was used to attach to a fixed item in the ground, e.g. a tree or gate, to prevent the trap from moving or being taken.
