Description (Physical description)
Addyman (1972): 'Right foot welted shoe complete from the extreme heel end of the sole. Various leather parts separated consist of toe puff, vamp, quarters, stiffener and lining, insole, welt, seat lift and sole. Adult size 2.
Toe puff: 'ears' made by folding the front edge back and stitching it to the sides, rear edge is scalloped, previously attached to the underside of the toe end of the vamp. Vamp has corresponding holes in the flesh side only.
Vamp: One piece 'ears' of the toe made by pulling in the corners probably during welt sewing and moulding them to the 'cared' toe puff. Throat of vamp has a collar stitched together by a butted seam still retaining the thread.
Quarters: One piece with no back seam and stitched at their front ends to the vamp either side with butted seams. Top edge has butted stitch holes.
Quarter-lining: lower and shorter than the quarters. Scalloped top edge where it was blind-stitched to inside quarters. Lowerd edge has welt seam holes corresponding to quarters.
Heerl-stiffener: Originally between quarters and quarters lining. Grain side is inwards and on the outer/flesh surface there are a number of parallel sloping lines.
Insole: Squared off toe and has welt-sewing 'channel' of edge/flesh holes all round. Traces of thread. Grain side/upper surface in concave in forepart. Impression of weave all over. Four nail holes on underside in a central line from heel to toe.
Welt: Now broken, but follow curvature of the insole margin. Two usual rows of stitch holes for welt seam and sole seam.
Seat-lift: Semicircular piece inserted between heel seat of sole and insole. Back edge is worn away Inside edge has two rows of holes for the welt and sole seam.
Sole: Has 'ears' at the toe end and row of stitching holes all around.'

Context (Acquisition Details)
Material excavated by Addyman in the 1960s and only recently donated to the Museum, when it was catalogued in bulk records. The finds from the Late Saxon settlement (see PCAS vol. 64) and those late Medieval and Post Medieval finds from a fishpond and 18th century house (see Post-Medieval Archaeology vol. 6) may sometimes share a single record, which will ultimately need to be split further.
