Description

A left turnshoe sole, as there are traces of nail holes at the rear end of the fore part and front of seat, indicating that it has been repaired by attaching a forepart 'clump' and a heel piece. There is wear at the forepart and heel-seat. The broad round toe indicated a time when shoes were replacing turn-shoes. Usual marginal row of edge-fleshed stitch holes.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Material excavated by Addyman in the 1960s and only recently donated to the Museum, when it was catalogued in bulk records. The finds from the Late Saxon settlement (see PCAS vol. 64) and those late Medieval and Post Medieval finds from a fishpond and 18th century house (see Post-Medieval Archaeology vol. 6) may sometimes share a single record, which will ultimately need to be split further.
