Accession No

Description
Very deteriorated fragments of a left foot broad-toed welted shoe. The most complete section is the insole, broken into two parts. Other fragments include parts of the ramp, quarters, side-linings, welt and sole. The welt passed right round the shoe, is broad with two seams. Two fragmentary seat pieces 'nest' into each other and have corresponding holes round the remaining margin. There appears to be two sets of holes suggesting a repair. The stitching channel is what is left of the sole.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Material excavated by Addyman in the 1960s and only recently donated to the Museum, when it was catalogued in bulk records. The finds from the Late Saxon settlement (see PCAS vol. 64) and those late Medieval and Post Medieval finds from a fishpond and 18th century house (see Post-Medieval Archaeology vol. 6) may sometimes share a single record, which will ultimately need to be split further.
