Context (Production / use)
This is part of a stone screen that was once part of a larger structure in Winchester Cathedral. Inigo Jones designed it in the then-fashionable Neoclassical style and it was installed in 1638. By the early nineteenth century, this style had become unpopular and the screen was removed to the Cathedral’s crypt, where it remained in pieces.

Context (Found together / assemblage)
The architect hired to design MAA's current building in the early 20th century, Thomas Jackson, saw the dismantled screen in the crypt of Winchester Cathedral. He arranged for the central portion to be brought to Cambridge where it was built into what is now the Andrews Gallery around 1910. At least four pieces were not incorporated into this design: TEMP.00540 - TEMP.00543.
