Description (Labels & Markings)
Hand written label on the back of the painting in red ink reads 'BURMESE PAINTING "EQUESTRIAN FIGURE WITH TWO ATTENDANTS" early or mid 19th century'.
Event Date

Description (Labels & Markings)
Typed label adhered to frame reads '90', this is in reference to Singer's original inventory. This number however does not correctly correspond to the item. '90' in Singer's inventory is described as 'Dha hmyaung (dagger)'. The painting is referenced in Singer's inventory labelled '97', and is described as 'Watercolour of a Burmese officer on horseback with two attendants'. Due to this error, the painting has been assigned the IDNO 'MN0126.97' even though the label gives another number.

"Burmese drawings, Inscriptions, etc., presented by (the second) LORD WYNFORD in 1849, through Sir James Weir Hogg, at various periods Chairman of the Court of Directors of the East India Co. The collection was apparently made between 1826 - 1832, or later by someone interest in the operation after the First Burmese War of 1824. It contains, firstly, of 84 sheets of drawing of all sorts, relating to Burma chiefly by NATIVE ARTISTS, mounted on cloth and arranged in folio form."
"BURMESE EQUESTRIAN FIGURE (A GENERAL?) WITH TWO ATTENDANTS" early/or mid 19th century.
This painting is very similar in style to the ones that are to be found in the above mentioned album in the India Office Library.
Similarities -
(1) colour pigments
(2) texture of paper (watermark - J. WHATMAN - 1830)
(3) style of drawing the human face etc.,
