Description

One of five cassowary quill ornaments (koi raema kutimb) made from wing bone of the cassowary, up to 12" long. They may be worn through the nose by either men or women, and be decorated with lime (A). Men may wear them sticking from their wigs either side of the face, so that the quills may be paired (as D and E are). D and E have decorative tufts of marsupial fur on the ends.

1967.14 A-B removed from wig 1967.1 when objects were removed from display and returned to the store. As part of Pacific Currents, the Pacific cases in The Maudslay gallery will be redeveloped with new displays to be completed by April 2018.
