Description

A signed portable bamboo betel box in four parts in the design known as shwe-gyin-khat. Possibly made of horsehair. The text describes who made it and where. It is covered in green lacquer and decorated in dark green, pale green, red, and gilded. The exposed green is darker than the original colour seen on the inside. The decoration is a four-petalled flower and circle with five dots.

A typed label adhered to the lid reads '28'. This is in reference to an inventory of lacquerware seen amongst the collector's paperwork written on 14th April 1999.

This is as follows: 'Script on the cover of the box. (top side) 1) "[non-Latni script]" Produced by Saya Tin. 2) "[non-Latni script]" TAIK SU QUARTER, PAGAN. 3) Bottom rim) "[non-Latni script]" - THIN - (finely made) EAT. ROYAL. BOX. (ENTER. TO PUT (?)) meaning not clear made for a member of the Burmese royal family? 4) "[non-Latni script]" HIGH QUALITY LACQUER WARE Beautiful script probably late 19th century. [non-Latin script] Noel F. Singer'.

A note seen folded in a tray, but now bagged, reads '£80 (Olympics Antique Fair May - 1986) c. 1900 or earlier (maybe after 1880?) (1 June 1986) Sunday. Type of lacquer called SHWEGYIN KHAT 6 [non-Latni script] CIRCULAR BOX DARK GREEN DECORATED WITH. 5 GOLD DOTS.' the note details the inscription on the lid (see Inscription Context field). On the other side of the note it reads 'Sylvia Fraser Lu's "Burmese Lacquerware" p.76 No. 65. "The process for creating the unusual uniform green background of this bowl is lost to today's lacquer producers.".
