Description

Signed betel box with two inner trays, the box is covered in red, black, green and yellow lacquer. Detailed scenes on the lid, sides and interior of the base depict members of court. On the lid there are eight seated figures, the scene looks as if it is separated between male and female figures. The side panels of lid and base show the same two scenes repeated one after the other. The side panel of the base is much brighter than the lid. The two inner trays are decorated with green, black and yellow bands, with a floral motif in the centre of the underside. Description (Labels & Markings)
A label adhered to the exterior reads '57'. This is in reference to an inventory of lacquerware seen amongst the collector's paperwork written on 14th April 1999. The interior is marked 'B.L.16.N.F.S'. The 'BL' number is in reference to a previous inventory devised by the collector during the ?1980s, one version of this inventory was seen amongst the collectors paperwork dated to 12th July 1983. However, although the betel box is marked with a 'BL' number, the item does not appear on the 'BL' inventory.
