Description

Signed betel box with one inner tray. The box is covered in red, black and green lacquer. The lid depicts three figures sitting within a palace, with the centre one slightly larger than the other two. The decoration on the clothing of the figures suggests wealth. There is one inscription on the top of the lid, with two around the side of the lid. The side panel of the lid is decorated with a floral motif. The inner tray has a red lacquer interior with a green, black and yellow exterior. The design is simple with bands of green and black, and a small amount of yellow detailing. The base of the box is decorated with one scene repeated twice, three seated figures in a palace. It is unclear whether these figures are meant to represent those on the lid, there are similarities with positioning and some clothing, however there are discrepancies. The design on the base is more simplistic than that on the lid. An elephant is depicted between the two repeated scenes. The bottom of the base is similar in design to the inner tray, with green, black and yellow detailing.
