Description

A small portable betel box lid and tray. Both are covered with lacquer and decorated in red, red-brown, black, and yellow. The cover depicts written and visual symbols for each of the 8 days of the week. The sides depict symbols for the twelve months of the year and the names. There are four inscription around the top. The edge is heavily damaged. The tray depicts a bird and is in good condition.

Both the lid and tray have a label adhered to the exterior which reads '53'. This is in reference to an inventory of lacquerware seen amongst the collector's paperwork written on 14th April 1999.

Description (Inscription)
The inscriptions on the four panels around the top of the lid read: 1) 'Yun-kon-the-Saya Sein' or 'Lacquerwre merchant Saya Sein', 2) taik-hwet-mu-haung' or this has been produced in the old style from his workshop', 3) Pagan-myo-Yan-tan-yat' or 'Yan-tan Quarter, Pagan', 4)Myanmar-naig-gan-daw-ah-thet-paing' or 'Upper Myanmar'.
