Context (Amendments / updates)
A letter from Mansel Spratling dated 3 August 1968 to John [?Coles] and passed on to Geoffrey Bushnell (see 1968 correspondence) describes his efforts to arrange for a collection of archaeological finds to be transferred from Ethiopia to Cambridge for comparative purposes. In this, he mentions 'the obsidian finds from the South found on John Blashford-Snell's previous expedition in 1966' as well as his own planned excavations. This suggests that the 1968 donation (the majority of which is obsidian) may have come via the Ethiopian Institute of Archaeology, rather than directly from the Sandhurst Ethiopia Expedition (led by Blashford-Snell). Further correspondence about this donation, and in particular regarding the findspots of the material, has not yet been identified.
