Context (Other owners)
The label glued to this object refers to a nose ornament in the shape of a bird, from Ulawa. It is unclear why it is glued on a drinking cup. There is no evidence that Walter Coote's collection donated to MAA comprised one of these ornaments. Similar objects can be found in MAA's collection but are said to come from Makira (San Cristoval), see E 1901.179 A-B.

Description (Labels & Markings)
A small label glued on the inside of the cup reads: '-NOSE ORNAMENT- / ULAUA. SOLOMON IS.- / [drawing of the ornament] / (BIRD).' Another label, with serrated edges, glued to the outside of the shell reads: 'Mrs H. Jones / Huntingdon'. Fragments of a label inside the cup.
