Animals at the Tree of Life

This painting on canvas by a Gond artist known only as Dhaneswhari depicts three birds around a tree growing from the head of a buffalo. The Tree of Life is a common image in Gond art, sometimes growing from the horns of an antelope or deer and identified as the sacred saja tree, home of the gods.
