Description (CMS Descriptions)
'B: Reuben thought this artist was less able. The design is also about fishing. At the bottom are hills and land (triangles) while horizontal lines inshore show "nets" that lead fish into a V-shaped opening of a stone-walled fish trap. Further horizontal panels show fish and lobsters inshore. Beyond them are the open seas, with two long, outward and inward, "travel lines" with three caught bonito between then and frigate birds ("belama") above them. Other motifs are four open circles or zeros; an oblong, double square, box; one square cross and one dash mark like a letter l. Reuben said he was unsure of the exact meaning of these "symbols," but thought they were probably tally marks to show a total number of bonito caught at different times (or by different men), but these "were not based on set units like tens, but on old quantities, known like knots in a counting string," that is stages reached with uneven intervals. Rhys Richards 8 July 2004. Transcribed by F. Veys 13/9/2004.'
