Description

Fringe for a mosquito curtain. Rectangular band of cream cotton with a strip of red fabric with gold floral decoration on each long edge; strips of red, green, and yellow wool forming crosses and columns in between the fabric strips; ten pendants of maroon and yellow wool, all but one decorated with gold embroidery and coloured glass panels; from the pendants hang tassels of red, yellow and green wool shapes alternating with cylindrical beads.

Description (Physical description)
A short broad band of white cotton covered with dark red cloth with golden floral designs. the central panel is decorated with pieces of felt (green, red, yellow) arranged in geometric designs. At the bottom, pendants backed with printed cloth are all, but one, embroidered with golden thread and decorated with small "mirrors". All the pendants but two have coloured tassels.

Three fringes for a mosquito curtain, each with white cotton background bordered by red cotton embroidered with gold. Central pattern made from strips of wool (yellow, green and red in one, and yellow, blue and red in the other two). From the bottom hang woollen pendants with decorations in gold, with mirrors.

Context (Amendments / updates)
W.W. Skeat made two collections in Southeast Asia. The first was made while he was District Magistrate in Selangor, Malaysia in 1896-1897 and is known as the First Skeat Collection or Skeat I. The Second was made in 1899-1900 on the Cambridge Exploring Expedition to the Malay Provinces of Lower Siam and known as the Second Skeat Collection, or Skeat II. Most objects were not given accession numbers on acquisition by MAA, and given Z Numbers during reorganisation in the 1980s. Several objects presumed to be from the Skeat Collections, but which cannot be traced either to an existing Z number or to Skeat’s catalogues, have been given TEMP numbers. Some of these are definitely Skeat, and some are not. The work of matching objects to their Skeat catalogue numbers is ongoing and likely to remain incomplete.
