Context (CMS Context)
Many of the database records for the 2006 Phillipson donation were not transferred from the transcription file onto the original FileMaker database. The records have now been reinstated, but as they have been created from old documentation rather that the physical object some information may need to be expanded upon visual inspection.
For this reason a shelf location at Shorts is also yet to be documented.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Collected by Professor David Phillipson, Director of MAA 1981- 2006. Acquired in Aksum from Gebre Maryam, a dealer in traditional arts & crafts. Carving & painting done by different artists. Purchased 1996/7 in Aksum (in Tigray).

Description (Physical description)
Triptych. Probably made of olive wood, and worn as amulets around the neck. Depicts conventional religions scenes: 1. St George slaying the dragon; 2. the Crucifixion; 3. the Virgin holding Christ; 4. Saints with Christ on the cross.

Description (Physical description)
A double diptych icon pendant made of wood, carved into a square with two square inlays of wood on the front and back, attached by hinges of thread. Inside the wooden inlays are painted scenes of St George slaying the dragon, the Crucifixion, the Virgin holding Christ and Saints with Christ on the cross. Outside carved with geometric patterns. A length of fibre is threaded carved cylinder on the top.
