This artwork is based on an Australian government map showing the subdivisions of Norfolk Island in 1900. It reflects on the historical layering and sometimes uncomfortable co-existence of different groups within the space of a small island. The land was divided between the Melanesian Mission and the Pitcairn Islanders, descendants of Tahitian women and the HMS Bounty mutineers, who were resettled on Norfolk Island in 1856. It also shows the old British penal settlement abandoned in the early 19th century. The artist originally framed the print with Norfolk Pine, native to the Island. Norfolk Island.
