Context (Display)
On display in the Maudslay Gallery, from till 2025.
With display texts that read, 'Lines that could be scars (no.24), 2015 / Tom Nicholson / Drypoint and burnishing
The lines on this print pick out a detail from John Webber's drawing An Interview between Captain Cook and the natives; the earliest known European image of contact between Europeans and Australian Aboriginal people. Look at the drawing to see the body scarification (deliberate cuts) on the bodies of the Australian Aboriginal men. The marks on the men were created with sharp tools, like those used to create the print.

The fishing spear in this case was taken by explorer Captain Cook in Australia in 1770. It represents another early and important moment of contact between Europeans and Australian Aboriginal people.
Lines that could be scars (no.24) is part of a series of 24 prints, produced as part of the Museum's collaborative Antipodes Project (2015-2016) with the Australian Print Workshop.
Gifted by the Australian Print Workshop, 2016. 2016.71
