On catalogue card for Z 10973: 'Large mother of pearl breast ornament from Ysabel. The cord for suspending it around the neck of the wearer is of twisted coconut fibre'.

MAA's acquisition register notes for E 1902.327: A large pearl-shell breast ornament, finely carved with a double frigate-bird. 'Bought from a Santa Cruz Boy who stated that it was carpophago or a pigeon - wings, tails, legs + his own head' JSG [John Stanley Gardiner]'.

Description (Physical description)
Pendant of mother of pearl carved with a frigate bird at each end, wings along the sides and tails along the lower edge. Carved lug in the centre of the top edge, pierced with two holes through which passes a thick cord of twisted coconut fibre. The outer side of the shell is heavily striated.
