A pre-museum label glued to the shaft reads [printed:] 'FENTON & SONS / 11 New Oxford St. / London' and [added in black ink:] 'E 379 LO'.

Description (CMS Description)
Long paddle club, the blade carved like a fish/shark with two fin-like projections on the sides. The projection and the base of the blade are decorated with carved incisions on one side. On the other, the fins are left undecorated. The shaft is oval in section and tapering to a point. The lower part is bound with a fine plait of ?orchid stem fibre dyed red.

On catalogue card for Z 6330: 'Paddle shaped club of hard wood. The handle is bound with a finely plaited band of sinnet. Two fin like knobs are on each side of the blade. Slight incision on the blade.'

On catalogue card for E 1904.247: 'Club' and [added later:] 'of hard wood with broad pointed leaf-shaped head with a rounded projection on either edge. The taper handle above the pointed but is bound with plaited braid.'
