Description (CMS Description)
Club used in dancing. Very different from the canoe-shaped type from the Santa Cruz. The handle is similar to the canoe-shaped clubs and decorated with red and white (lime) motifs. The head is shaped like the bruit of the Barringtonia asiatica and decorated with red pigments. It is unlikely that the head has been inserted into the handle – they seem to have been carved from a single piece of wood. A ‘skirt’ of brown plant fibre is attached just below fruit-shaped head. The butt is square in section and flared. There is a large crack running from the butt to the head. To the lower part of the handle is attached a cord of plaited plant fibre with pendants of hollow cane and seeds.
