Description (CMS Description)
Club used in dancing. Monoxyle and heavy. The entire surface has been rubbed with lime. The head of the club is canoe-shaped, tapering to a point and curving upwards. The tip of the head is chipped. The head is decorated with geometrical motifs in red and black pigments on all sides. On the upper side, there are two triangular faces curving upwards carved in relief, with small holes pierced through their nose, to which are attached several lengths of grey seed beads. The head is covered in a thick ‘skirt’ of dark brown hibiscus fibre. The handle is thick and circular in section and terminates in a slightly convex knob. A length of plaited plant fibre is attached to the handle and forms a rattle of 12 hollow tubes of cane and seed pods. Another two types of cords are attached to the handle.
