Description

Dance club - Dance club of heavy wood, canoe-shaped, rubbed with lime and painted with geometrical motifs in red and black. On two sides, the head is carved with pierced lugs for attachment of plant fibre tassels (now missing). Thick cylindrical handle with conical knob. The base of the handle is carved with a large rectangular hole, probably to attach rattles made of cane and seeds (now missing).

Context (CMS Context)
The collections of Rev. William Henry Edgell (Melanesian Mission) came to the Museum in 1923, 1925 and 1961 (through a family member for the latter). It is unknown which of these dates applies to the arrival of this object into MAA's collections.

Labels & inscriptions: A small cream label previous attached to the object (now kept with it) reads: 'Santa / Cruz' on one side and 'Edgell. / Not entered' on the other. A large round label with metallic rim reads: 'SANTA / CRUZ' on one side and 'DUPLICATE / FOR / EXCHANGE' on the other.
