Description (Display)
'Another India: Explorations and Expressions of Indigenous South Asia' 07/03/2017 - 22/04/2018 MAA exhibition label text reads:
The statue & the core
These artefacts produced by the studio of Rajendra Baghel in Kondagaon were collected by John Doubleday, an English sculptor who spent several months on a residency with Baghel in 2011. Doubleday and Baghel shared techniques and ideas, and produced a number of collaborative works now in the collection of MAA.
1. Cores for a sculpture
Every gadwakam sculpture is made by modelling a figure in
wax around an earth core and casing it in clay, which is
then baked in the fire. The wax melts away or is ‘lost’ (giving the technique the name ‘lost wax’) and molten metal poured in to take its place. The core is made of several ingredients including river mud, rice chaff to help bind it together and very fine soil from ant hills.
