Model of a rajim canoe prow carving. Newton (1975:8-9) notes that type 2 carvings, which this model represents, are 'found throughout the Massim area, except in the East Cape and the d'Entrecasteaux.'

Description (Physical description)
Carved wood; rectangular lower section with two opposing semicircular projections above, one smaller with chipped edge. Carved in low relief on one side with bands of spiral designs that follow curve of object; traces of white pigment remain. Negative spaces in-filled with black and red pigment. Small triangular cut-out near base of chipped semicircular projection. Red resin on base. Reverse unstained with linear incisions down each side of rectangular section.

Appears as item 36 on Seligman's catalogue of objects donated to the museum on behalf of William Cooke Daniels, see MAA Archive OA2/12/9: 'ditto [Prow Ornaments from model canoes, Kwaiawata.], ? locality. Following the expedition, Seligman catalogued and donated the collections on the understanding they were a gift from Cooke Daniels, the expedition's primary funder.
