Description
Model Canoe Prow Breakwater - Carved wood; rectangular lower section with two opposing semicircular projections above, one smaller. Carved with bands of spiral designs; traces of white pigment. Negative spaces in-filled with black and red pigment. Reverse unstained with linear incisions down each side of rectangular section.

Model of a rajim canoe prow carving. Newton (1975:8-9) notes that type 2 carvings, which this model represents, are 'found throughout the Massim area, except in the East Cape and the d'Entrecasteaux.'

Description (Physical description)
Carved wood; rectangular lower section with two opposing semicircular projections above, one smaller with chipped edge. Carved in low relief on one side with bands of spiral designs that follow curve of object; traces of white pigment remain. Negative spaces in-filled with black and red pigment. Small triangular cut-out near base of chipped semicircular projection. Red resin on base. Reverse unstained with linear incisions down each side of rectangular section.

Following the expedition, Seligman catalogued and donated the collections on the understanding they were a gift from Cooke Daniels, the expedition's primary funder.
