It is recorded in Beasley's original acquisition register (vol.1) as: 'SOLOMON GROUP: Wooden Canoe ornament made of a board engraved with a human figure + decorated along the top by a row of white shells. From the Cohn Collection, Sold at Stevens Lot 25 2.6.12 (where it was described as a grave ornament). Bt W. Oldman'. It was purchased for 1/15/- [Lucie Carreau, 11/07/2017].

The figure depicted on the front of the object resembles figures from the Banks Islands (Vanuatu). No such figures are known in the Solomon Islands.
