Description

Fragment of a tinned or silvered copper alloy scabbard throat or mouth band. Ornamented with rouletted bands of cord design; chevrons at the surviving terminal. Slight traces of either silvering or tinning between the grooved lines.

Michael J Cuddeford found this material during the mid 1990s during metal detecting in West Wickham. It has been registered with the Portable Antiquities Scheme and gifted to MAA. Context (Analysis)
In June 2015 Paul Mortimer, author of a forthcoming book on Anglo-Saxon swords, examined this object and identified it as a scabbard throat. It had previous been identified by Michael Cuddeford as part of a bracelet.

Description (Physical description)
A section of a bronze scabbard throat or mouth band. It is decorated with rouletted bands with a cord design, and there are small chevrons decorating the end. There are some slight traces of either silvering or tinning running partially down the edge of the rouletting.
