Description

A section of a bronze scabbard throat or mouth band. Decorated with five parallel grooved lines, the outermost bands are cabled. The extant terminal is decorated with a transverse grooved line and five ring and dots with curved, incised lines between to form pointed ovals.

Michael J Cuddeford found this material during the mid 1990s during metal detecting in West Wickham. It has been registered with the Portable Antiquities Scheme and gifted to MAA. Context (Analysis)
In June 2015 Paul Mortimer, author of a forthcoming book on Anglo-Saxon swords, examined this object and identified it as a scabbard throat. It had previous been identified by Michael Cuddeford as part of a bracelet.
This object was identified by Michael Cuddeford as apparently being the corresponding end to the band illustrated in the Journal of the Haverhill and District Archaeological Group vol. 6 part 1. p. 20. fig. 7 no. 4/25. (see Bib).
