Context (CMS Context)
What appears to be the original catalogue card to include this object describes it as: 'Pebble obtained from ancient grave and worn as amulet'. However, this seems to contradict the note written contemporaneously to collection, namely that it was the pebble amulets seen in the Glasgow Exhibition that had been taken from ancient graves, not this particular pebble. Therefore, the Period is listed as 'Post Medieval'.

Context (CMS Context)
Typed note found accompanying this object reads: 'I bought this pebble from William Brough, Stromness, Orkney, 18 June, 1911. It had been used for generations as a[n] amulet worn in a little flannel bag round the [n]eck. I[n] the same week we saw in the Prehistoric collection of Mr L.M. Mann, in the Glasgow Exhibition a number of similar pebbles obtained from ancient graves, where they had been buried with the dead. W.R. 22 June, 1911.'
