Description (Labels & Markings)
Note found inside the jug, probably written by G.I. Jones:[Typescript]: 'This jug was used to pour libations at the shrine of Nuetchetara Juju (Aba division E. Nigeria)./ What I'd like to know is it's approximate traded date which would give me some idea of when it was traded to West Africa./ The Juju as of the type know as Judicial Oracle and was invoked by people to prove the truth of their statement- by causing them to die within a month if they were perjuring themselves.'
[Added later in pencil in GI Jones' hand], 'The jug was probably made in the 18th century'
Written on reverse in ballpoint pen, 'Note inside about jug'.
