Description (Display)
'Another India: Explorations and Expressions of Indigenous South Asia' 07/03/2017 - 22/04/2018 MAA exhibition label text reads:
The statue & the core
These artefacts produced by the studio of Rajendra Baghel in Kondagaon were collected by John Doubleday, an English sculptor who spent several months on a residency with Baghel in 2011. Doubleday and Baghel shared techniques and ideas, and produced a number of collaborative works now in the collection of MAA.
2. Adivasi drummer
Composed around three cores similar to those on the left -a base, torso and head - this
sculpture is one of the standard forms that Ghassiya sculptors produce today. Figures of Adivasi men and women, usually dancers or musicians, are made for the tourist or ‘tribal art’ market. These stereotypical representations reinforce the connection between Adivasis and music and dance.
