Description

Ugubu. A musical bow made from wood. At one end, there are four pairs of V-shaped notches made along either side of the bow, and a triangular protrusion at the very end; this is likely where a string would have been attached. At the other end, there is a single V-shaped notch in the side, and another in the end.

There are two old paper labels adhered. One reads 'HB' and is written in a distinctive way - this has been seen on many objects from the Henry Bulwer collection, so this object is clearly also from the Bulwer collection. The other is handwritten and reads 'Ugubu (one-stringed instrument.)'.

Description (Physical description)
Ugubu, musical bow or musical stringed instrument, unaccessioned and unprovenanced. It has a D-shaped wooden cross section though this appears to have twisted slightly. It has a notch-type nock at one end ad a small, rounded, protruding nock at the other end. There are four pairs of V-shaped notches made along either side of the bow at one end. At the other end there is one V-shaped notch made into the side of the bow.
No bow string was seen with the object.
