There are two old paper labels adhered. One reads 'HB' and is written in a distinctive way - this has been seen on many objects from the Henry Bulwer collection, so this object is clearly also from the Bulwer collection. The other is handwritten and reads 'Ugubu (one-stringed instrument.)'.

This object is described as '1 Ugubu or one stringed music instrument. Note either Zulu or Swazi' in Henry Bulwer's 'List of articles, Zulu, South African or Bornean packed ready for transporting to the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Cambridge'. This was compiled by Bulwer and sent to Anatole von Hügel.

Description (Physical description)
Ugubu, musical bow or musical stringed instrument, unaccessioned and unprovenanced. It has a D-shaped wooden cross section though this appears to have twisted slightly. It has a notch-type nock at one end ad a small, rounded, protruding nock at the other end. There are four pairs of V-shaped notches made along either side of the bow at one end. At the other end there is one V-shaped notch made into the side of the bow.
No bow string was seen with the object.

Ugubu. A musical bow made from wood. At one end, there are four pairs of V-shaped notches made along either side of the bow, and a triangular protrusion at the very end; this is likely where a string would have been attached. At the other end, there is a single V-shaped notch in the side, and another in the end.
