Context (Found together / assemblage)
Found in a pit together with an iron axe (Z 1394), an iron key (1883.603 A) and iron knives (Z 16372, and at least one other). Hughes dated them as Saxon or Viking, which Fox appears to have accepted.

Context (Amendments / updates)
This object was accessioned as tentatively from Cambridgeshire and with no other provenance. It does, however, match the illustrations of a hilt guard from Hauxton Mill produced by Hughes and Fox (see Bib). The measurements provided by Hughes are not precise (i.e. he gives the length as 'about 3 inches') but the guard comfortably matches them. Therefore it is almost certain that the guard is indeed the one from Hauxton Mill and the Place field has been updated accordingly. 9/9/2014 I.Gunn
