Context (CMS Context)
In 1887, this socketed axe was transferred from the Fitzwilliam Museum along with one other socketed axe and five palstaves (1887.16.1-.7). Its original accession number appears to have been removed as part of an early and abortive scheme of re-numbering the archaeology collections; the 'B' of 'B 105' here referring to Bronze. As a result, this object was disassociated from its original accession number, but has been matched up based on the type, source and place and sequence of 'B' numbers. It was later assigned a new accession number: Z 25117. As the BCR Register does not include B 105 and B 106 (even though they are marked on the socketed axes) it is unclear which 1887.16 suffix corresponded to which 'B' number. It has therefore been assumed that they went in order: B 105 (i.e. Z 25117) corresponding to 1887.16.6 and B 106 corresponding to 1887.16.7 (which is marked '1887.16' but not with its suffix). Therefore, Z 25117 has been added to the idno field and the description from Z 25117 has been copied across to this record. 7/8/2014 I.Gunn
