Context (CMS Context)
In 1887, this palstave was transferred from the Fitzwilliam Museum along with four other palstaves and two socketed axes (1887.16.1-.7). The other six axes of this transfer were re-numbered as part of an early and abortive scheme of re-numbering the archaeology collections. These new numbers, 'B 101' etc., were marked on those objects. This palstave seems to, for some reason, have been left out of this renumbering process as it is not listed in the BCR Register (which records these types of 're'-numbers). It is nevertheless almost certain that this palstave became disassociated from its original 1887 accession number and was assigned a new accession number: Z 4285. Z 4285 is part of the sequence of the other, renumbered 1887 palstaves (Z 4282 - Z 4286) from Chatteris transferred from the Fitzwilliam Museum, which would account for all five, and there are no unaccounted for palstaves from Chatteris. Therefore, Z 4285 has been added to the idno field and the description from Z 4285 has been copied across to this record. 7/8/2014 I.Gunn
