Context (CMS Context)
In 1887, this palstave was transferred from the Fitzwilliam Museum along with four other palstaves and two socketed axes (1887.16.1-.7). Its original accession number appears to have been removed as part of an early and abortive scheme of re-numbering the archaeology collections; the 'B' of 'B 103' here referring to Bronze. As a result, this object was disassociated from its original accession number, but has been matched up based on the type, source and place in the BCR Register (which records the 'B' numbers). It was later assigned a new accession number: Z 4286. As the BCR Register did not indicate which 1887.16 suffix corresponded to which 'B' number, it has been assumed that they went in order: 1887.16.1 corresponding to B 101 (which in turn corresponded to Z 4284) and so on. Therefore, Z 4286 has been added to the idno field and the description from Z 4286 has been copied across to this record. 7/8/2014 I.Gunn
