Description

Model waka taua. A model war canoe made from wood. The canoe has been constructed from a solid base section, side panels lashed to the base with plant fibre, and four taumanu cross beams. The outside of the canoe including the hull and the taumanu have whakarare carvings. Both sides of the canoe are carved with manaia figures. The taurapa, stern post, is carved with whakarare carvings and figures. The tauihu, prow, is carved with a male face. Some of the carved figures have pāua shell (haliotis) eyes.
