Context (CMS Context)
These three arrows, found tied together, were not numbered but a label on one of the arrows notes it was deposited by W.E. Oliver in 1893 and originates from the Malay Archipelago.

Two arrows have a white rectangular paper label adhered to shaft which reads 'Captain Oliver/ Deposited/ 25/6/93' in brown ink. The arrow with the narrow point also notes in pencil on the shaft 'Damma (S. of Ambo Yua) '. The third arrow with three prongs is not labelled but has a clean rectangular area where a similar sized label to the above labels may have been adhered but no longer survives. It is possible that because this third arrow is of a similar material to the two others to which it was bound it may also belong to this deposit.

The 1893 Annual Report notes in deposits under no.9: '[...] three arrows with reed shafts and palm wood heads. Damma, Serwati Islands, Malay Archipelago, November 1891. [See Bassett-Smith, in Journ. Anthrop. Inst.] Brought home by the depositor. Lieutenant W.E. Oliver, R.N.'

As this description from the Annual Report matched the three arrows, and as no other object number on the CMS could be identified as belonging to these objects, this D number was assigned to them. It is possible however that the objects were later renumbered or Z'ed, especially as no catalogue card for D 1893.9 could be found. The deposit register for 1893 could not be located and therefore could not provide further information.
