Context (CMS Context)
Presented by The Art Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
An acquisition project to build a collection of modern and contemporary work on paper from Australia, Canada and South Africa was undertaken over 2011-13 with the support of a grant under The Art Fund's RENEW programme. The collection was developed with the expert advice and generous assistance of Annie Coombes and Norman Vorano in relation to South African and Inuit artists respectively. Khadija Carroll, Anita Herle and Diana Wood Conroy also contributed to the selection process.

Robert Davidson (1946 -) is one of the most highly acclaimed living Northwest Coast artist. Of Haida and Tlingit descent, he is an outstanding craftsman whose creative and personal interpretation of traditional Haida form is unparalleled. His work, spanning 5 decades, has been highlighted in numerous publications and exhibitions, including the first ever major solo exhibition by a Northwest Coast artist at The Vancouver Art Gallery (1993). Davidson has received numerous high prestigious awards including the Order of Canada, the Lifetime Achievement award from the Canadian Aboriginal Achievement Foundation as well as election to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
Davidson's innovative and highly influential approach to NWC design is most clearly demonstrated by his highly successful experiments with abstraction, exemplified by the two distinctive prints selected for MAA's collections by Anita Herle.
