Description (CMS Description)
Ceremonial tablet 'Koe'. Painted oval, with pierced tang at top, & tang at base decorated with 3 rows of toothed lines. Hole at each side. Slightly concave-convex. Toothed line border on upper half, chevron border lower half. Human face design surmounted by toothed line, with beard-like tab below mouth. Projecting nose with nose-stick through perforation. A gope, (spirit or ancestor board), kept in the men's house. Also called kwoi or hohao, depending where it was made. Powerful spirits (imunu) were associated with a specific location in the landscape, rivers, or sea, and were linked to the specific clan within whose territory they dwelt. Individual imunu inhabited gope boards and their image appears on the front.
