Description (Physical description)
Accession register for 2005.654: 'Seed apron'.
Event Date 2005
Author: Lucie Carreau

Context (Production / use)
Made by Patowa, the widow of one of the first captains of the village. She is regarded by women in the village as one of the finest makers of bead aprons. The mara-mara seed apron is not valued as highly as glass bead aprons by the Trio or Wayana: the latter bring higher prestige to their owner, allow for more intricate designs, and last considerably longer. This piece was worn by Vanessa Grotti during festivities while doing fieldwork. It is rather smaller than a standard bead apron worn by women during celebrations and drinking parties.
