Context (Field collection)
Gift from missionary schoolteachers Cees and Ineke Koelewijn. The maker is a woman from the village who takes part in the embroidery workshop directed by Mrs. Koelewijn. This is an example of alternative commercial products introduced by the missionaries to encourage industry and try to allow women greater access to cash, but with mitigated results, especially because the women entirely depend on the missionaries for access to the raw materials. In the absence of a genuine market for these products, the missionary couple buy them all and sell them to friends in Holland. According to the missionaries, the repeated design represents a squirrel; it is more likely to be squirrel monkey (saimiri sciureus), or possibly a dog.
