Context (CMS Context)
Collected by Vanessa Grotti
Part of a group of objects, (2005.629-49), bought, bartered or received as a gift through the intermediary of the collectors' extended family. This is an old item collected in Mimi Siku's household, and bought for €15. Like all woven items, it is made by men.
Katali are used by women to carry the heavy loads they traditionally handle, in particular firewood, cassava roots or toher products brought back from the garden. It is not unusual to see a man carrying one too, to assist his wife. Now they can also be used by young boys to carry the enormous speakers of a sound system to a drinking party, often set in the communal house.
