Bio) Female collector: Dr. Andrea Nixon was a graduate of Selwyn college who completed a doctorate in Mongolian music. The instruments were given by the family of the collector, Dr W.C. Nixon, Glenys Nixon and Douglas Nixon, after her death in May 2004.
A group of black and white photographs were given together with the three instruments (2005.259 A-F; 2005.260; 2005.261). There are 16 photographs of the instruments themselves, 3 photographs of Mongolian musical instruments and 4 photographs of people holding Mongolian instruments. One these is a colour image. The photographs await archiving for the photo archive.

Horsehead fiddle with a four-sided wooden sound box, covered in skin, dyed green, with wooden neck terminating in a dragon?, painted silver, whose open mouth bites the neck, and above whom is a horsehead, painted green, which curves over the dragon. With 2 wooden keys at top of neck, attached to the two strings of horsehair, stretched over a larger M-shaped wooden bridge at the bottom and a smaller M-shaped bridge at the top of the neck but which are tied to the object by lengths of twine at the bottom and ?wire, connecting to the pegs at the top. One horsehair string damaged, and corners of sound box slightly scraped.
