Catalogue card reads [handwritten in blue pen:] '1973.93 MELANESIA. FIJI. Lau Group. Barkcloth. Large cloth used in a Lauan marriage. Comparatively recent. Rubbed in light red-brown, stencilled in b&w. 6.29m x 6.59m. Fiji Museum, Suva (shot on Maudslay Floor) PTO.' Two black and white photographs of the object glued to the front of the card. [in pencil at the back of the card:] 'Palmer, Curator of Fiji Museu, obtained this on request of P. Gathercole. Palmer died shortly after + account not settled as of 10/79.' [added in blue pen:] 'S. PHELPS. 26.10.79. Looks like a GATU VAKAVITI from MOCE Island (See Kooijman's book on Moce). MALUPO is the name of a man I know who lives on Moce. Each partner had a large cloth like this at the wedding, with their respective names on - made by each's relatives.'

[Added later]'S. Phelps [aka Prof Steven Hooper] 26.10.79/ Looks like a GATU VAKAVITI from MOCE Island (see Kooijiman's book on Moce). MALUPO is the name of a man I know who lives on Moce. Each partner had a large cloth like this at the wedding, with their respective names on- made by each's reetives.'
