Description

A painted wooden truncheon. Depicted on the truncheon is the royal arms and those of Cambridge. In addition 'RD. FOSTER Esqr. MAYOR' and '1839' have been painted on. Made on a lathe, the handle has two deep ridges in the centre with a shallower band on either side, and a rounded end.

Description (Physical description)
Annual Report: A truncheon painted with the Royal Arms and those of the town of Cambridge. One of the truncheons is inscribed 'Rd. Foster, Esq., Mayor 1839'.

Context (CMS Context)
A label is attached on the handle which reads 'Constable's truncheon Cambridge'. A thin wire has been passed through the hole and tied into the handle. The Accession register states that it was purchased for 6 shillings and 6 pence.
