Catalogue card reads [handwritten in blue ink:] '1951.1008. A-D Oceania. Polynesia. New Zealand. Four greenstone adze heads of different sizes. A = Very large, olivish-black in colour. Butt roughened with "pecked" technique. The rest is highly polished. Length 10 1/8". Width of cutting edge = 2 7/8 ins. and nearly straight.
B = With "pecked" butt and well polished cutting edge. Very dark green colour. Length 4 5/8". Cutting edge slightly convex 2" wide.
C = Very dark green and highly polished except where the butt end has been roughened with "pecking'. Length 5 1/8". Width of straight cutting edge 2 1/12 ins.'; [continues on reverse of card:]
'D= Lighter green, mottled well polished small adze blade. Showing sawing marks on one side and facetting. The whole surface is polished. Length 3 3/4 ins. Width of straight cutting edge 2 1/8". No exact provenance given.

Donated and presumably collected by New Zealand-born mycologist John Henry (Jack) Warcup, who did his PhD at Cambridge University (19. In 1951 he became a senior microbiologist in the Department of Plant Pathology at the then Waite Agricultural Research Institute, University of Adelaide, now known as the Waite Research Institute (WRI).
