Context (CMS Context)
Pelicans and other sea birds were said to have witnessed the first, founding pukumani mortuary ceremony, following the tragic adultery of the first man Purukuparli's wife with the moon, Japarra. The birds are said to have taught the first dances; this mythic event gives rise to a generic 'Tiwi bird' often featured in modern Tiwi sculpture, fabric printing, and print making.
