Context (CMS Context)
Maryanne Mungatopi is a senior Tiwi artist who has also made carvings; essentially the same customary design system was and is employed on ceremonial carvings, modern carvings for sale, body scarification (no longer practiced), and body paintings, which continue to be applied in ceremonial contexts. The Tiwi artists in general each adapt the pukamani and kulama ceremonial motifs in personally distinctive ways. In this work the image is of sculpted figures and the strong incision and relief of those figures is palpable, though carvings would not formerly have been created or grouped in this way to image a family.
